ChatGPT exporter alternatives, and how to pick one

Four questions that actually decide this

Feature lists in this category all look the same. These are the differences that show up in practice:

1. Where is the file built — your machine, or theirs? Some exporters, particularly for PDF, send the conversation to a server to be rendered. If you export work conversations, this is the question that matters most, and it's the one least likely to be answered on the store listing. Check the privacy policy rather than the feature list.
2. Can you choose which messages to export? Most tools export the entire thread. A real working session is mostly dead ends, so whole-thread export produces an archive you'll never reread.
3. Does it handle the platforms you use? Most of the category is ChatGPT-only. If you also use Claude or Gemini, one tool that covers all of them beats three that each do one.
4. What does the free tier actually give you? "Free" here ranges from genuinely unlimited on most formats to a trial that stops after a handful of exports. Check which formats are capped, not just whether there's a free plan.

The options

ChatGPT's built-in share link

Free, official, nothing to install. Creates a public web page of the conversation that anyone with the URL can read.

Use it when you want to show someone a conversation. It's the right tool for that and no extension improves on it. Don't use it as an archive: it's a link to a page on someone else's servers, not a file you hold, it can be revoked or changed, and it's public to anyone who gets the URL.

Print to PDF

Also free and built in — Ctrl+P, then Save as PDF. Genuinely underrated for short conversations.

Use it when the thread is short and you just need a file. Its limits: long conversations print incomplete, because these sites only keep the messages near your viewport loaded; page furniture like the sidebar tends to come along; and it's all-or-nothing, with no way to keep four answers and drop the rest.

ChatGPT Exporter

The established tool in this category and the one most people find first, with a large install base and a long track record. Broad format support and a free tier that covers most formats.

Use it when ChatGPT is the only platform you use and you want the most-proven option — there's a reason it's the leader. Worth checking first: their own FAQ states that PDF export data "is only temporarily processed on our servers", so PDF generation is not local. For a recipe or a travel itinerary that's irrelevant; for a conversation about your employer's systems, decide deliberately rather than by default.

Sider and other AI sidebar assistants

Sider and tools like it are broad AI assistants — chat with multiple models, summarise pages, translate — with conversation export as one feature among many.

Use it when you want the whole assistant and export is a bonus. Don't if export is the only thing you need: you're installing a large permission surface and a subscription priced for a much bigger product to get one feature.
